“Every Good Endeavor”

Tim Keller tackles the dualism of sacred vs secular work head on, helping us integrate our faith and work. We are not immune to this dualism in healthcare missions. One of our medical missionaries said to me that she was told ‘to get a ministry’ outside of the 70 hours-per-week that she was working in the hospital! I’ve also heard others (thankfully not with my agency) say, “my work in the hospital is my gospel work” and yet fail to see they were serving idols of their own making. We need gospel integration not dualism!

As we communicate the love of Christ in another culture, it is easy to think that the ministry revolves around our activities. In fact, the key word in Christ’s “Great Commission” is to make disciples.  That means enabling others to learn from Christ. It also implies that we ourselves learn in the process. Here is … Continue reading How can local believers show compassion through healthcare ministries?

Myths of medical missions

Medical mission work must have an vision, a framework for understanding how it fits into the work of God in the world. This framework must come out of our understanding of Scripture. Healer of soul and body

I have treated patients in Ethiopia, Asia and North America, and know something of the troubles that patients bring to doctors. Here we read that Jesus also attracted many people who sought Him out for healing.  Since He is the Son of God, He had the power to heal them — and He did so. … Continue reading Healer of soul and body
